Just got home from the ER. Was having problems with my left eyelid, and then my left cheek quit working.  The left side of my face was paralyzed.  I was freaking out thinking I was having a stroke, and thinking that if it was a stroke I would rather die than live with stroke problems. I looked online for symptoms and read that if you think you are having a stroke, call 911 immediately, not to drive, that seconds count.

Being petrified of the insurmountable debt associated with ambulance rides, I chose to browse google a bit. I read that in the ER they give anticoagulants to break up blood clots and prevent brain damage, so I went to the local store and bought some aspirin and took a couple 300 mg ones. The drooping cheek worsened.  I can't drink without drink spilling around my mouth. I texted a friend and she convinced me to go to the ER. So, I went. I drove 20 minutes up the road to the next town because they have a non profit hospital with a better reputation.  I was seen immediately. They punched an IV in me and did an EKG.  Then I saw the doctor.  He told me I have Bell's Palsy. Evidently it's a viral infection that causes face paralysis. He prescribed steroids and eye cream and told me to use the cream in my eye and tape it shut at night because the paralyzed eyelid can result in the eye not being covered, drying out, and causing problems.  Evidently they don't completely understand Bel's Palsey, and sometimes it goes away in a couple weeks and sometimes the condition is permanent.

I was freaked out. I had considered what a s***show our healthcare is in this country before tonight, but thinking I had a stroke and questioning whether to go to the hospital or staying home and quite possibly dying really drove the point further home to me.  Life mostly sucks.  That being said, I am thrilled that I did not have stroke. And life goes on.
